In August 26th to 27th 2017, UNDP China and IamtheCODE brought together 60 geeks, do-gooders and innovators for a two-day “hackathon”. The event helped raise awareness about the SDGs and demonstrate how skills in coding, app-building and data analysis can be used for social good.
Participants received a general introduction to the SDGs and IamtheCODE founder Marieme Jamme tought them the basics of coding using build-it-yourself Kano computers.
They split into three groups, each competing to design a solution for a specific SDG. Their proposals included a platform for volunteers to provide free courses for migrant workers (SDG 4 on education), an app to raise awareness and collect data on gender violence (SDG 5 on gender equality) and a platform for people to share and measure green behaviours (SDG 13 on climate action).
