Decoding the SDGs in China: two-day hackathon

UNDP China and IamtheCODE brought together geeks, do-gooders and innovators to raise awareness about the SDGs, design SDG solutions and show how coding can change lives.

In August 26th to 27th 2017, UNDP China and IamtheCODE brought together 60 geeks, do-gooders and innovators for a two-day “hackathon”. The event helped raise awareness about the SDGs and demonstrate how skills in coding, app-building and data analysis can be used for social good.

They split into three groups, each competing to design a solution for a specific SDG. Their proposals included a platform for volunteers to provide free courses for migrant workers (SDG 4 on education), an app to raise awareness and collect data on gender violence (SDG 5 on gender equality) and a platform for people to share and measure green behaviours (SDG 13 on climate action).

Participants will remain engaged in the SDGs as Geek4Good champions.
